Did you know2023
Clariant Catalysts supplies steam methane reforming (SMR) catalysts for hydrogen production, FCC catalysts for gasoline production, and methanol synthesis catalysts for industrial methanol production -- from the same Swiss company. SMR catalysts enable both conventional grey hydrogen production (for ammonia fertilizer and oil refining) and blue hydrogen production (with CCS for lower-carbon hydrogen). Clariant's methanol synthesis catalysts enable conventional methanol from natural gas AND the emerging e-methanol pathway (methanol from green hydrogen and captured CO2 for sustainable shipping fuel). The same catalyst product line enables both the fossil fuel economy (conventional grey hydrogen, fossil methanol) and the green energy transition (blue hydrogen, e-methanol for maritime decarbonization). A single Swiss catalyst company sits at the conversion point between fossil and green chemical production -- where the molecule (hydrogen or methanol) is identical regardless of whether it was made from natural gas or renewable electricity.
Clariant AG ↗Origin2023
Clariant's catalyst business traces through multiple Swiss chemical company mergers: it was assembled from Sudchemie (German specialty catalyst company), Sued-Chemie's predecessors, and Clariant AG's own chemical heritage. Clariant AG itself was formed in 1995 when Ciba-Geigy spun off its specialty chemicals operations before Ciba-Geigy merged with Sandoz to form Novartis. The Swiss pharmaceutical and chemical industry restructuring of the 1990s -- which created Novartis, ABB, and several specialty chemical spinoffs -- produced Clariant as an independent specialty chemicals company. Clariant's 2021 strategic decision to focus on its core businesses resulted in the sale of its plastics and coatings businesses while retaining catalysts and specialty chemicals. The 2018 partnership with SINOPEC on S-Zorb fuel upgrading catalyst technology is unusual: a Swiss specialty chemical company transferred catalyst technology to the world's largest oil refiner to serve the Chinese domestic refining market.
