  • Did you know2024

CMOC Group is known in Western supply-chain analysis as the second-largest niobium producer (via its Brazilian mine), but globally it is more important as the world's largest cobalt producer — its Tenke Fungurume and Kisanfu copper-cobalt mines in the DRC supply a significant share of the cobalt that goes into EV and smartphone batteries. The same Chinese state-linked entity that helps set prices in the steel-alloying supply chain (via niobium) also controls the battery metals supply chain that underpins decarbonization (via cobalt). Supply chain analysts tracking steel infrastructure and those tracking EV batteries are watching the same parent company without realizing it.

  • Origin2023

CMOC acquired the Boa Vista niobium mine from Anglo American in 2016 for $1.7 billion — part of Chinese state-linked CMOC Group's (China Molybdenum) strategy to secure critical mineral supply chains outside China. The Catalao deposit in Goias is the world's second-largest known niobium ore body. Anglo American divested to raise capital after the commodity downcycle, inadvertently handing China control of the second seat in a market where CBMM already holds ~77% share.

  • Incident2024

Anglo American sold its entire Brazilian niobium and phosphate business — including the Catalão (Boa Vista) mine — to China Molybdenum (CMOC) in 2016 for US$1.5–1.7 billion. This transferred control of the world's second-largest niobium mine to a Chinese state-linked entity. Since the acquisition, CMOC Brasil has steadily increased production, setting a record of 10,024 tonnes Nb in 2024. The transaction effectively placed ~11% of global niobium supply under Chinese corporate control, complementing the 15% Chinese stake in CBMM.
