  • Did you know2024

CMPC is simultaneously the world's 2nd-largest eucalyptus pulp producer (supplying tissue and paper manufacturers globally) and a retail tissue brand owner in Latin America (Petal, Noble brands sold in Chilean/Brazilian supermarkets). This vertical integration from forest → pulp → tissue → retail shelf is unusual in global pulp: most large pulp producers (Arauco, Suzano, APRIL) sell market pulp to tissue manufacturers who then create retail brands. CMPC competes with its own tissue pulp customers in some markets while supplying them in others. The Matte family's simultaneous control of Banco de Chile (where CMPC deposits operating cash and accesses credit) and CMPC itself creates an unusually tight family-controlled integration of industrial and financial capital that is rare in modern developed-market companies but common in Latin American family conglomerates.

  • Origin2023

CMPC (Compañía Manufacturera de Papeles y Cartones) was founded in 1920 in Santiago — at the intersection of Chile's early industrial modernization and the Matte and Alessandri oligarchic families who would dominate Chilean economic life for the 20th century. The founding year (1920) places CMPC at the beginning of Chile's industrialization drive under the Arturo Alessandri Palma presidency. The Matte family (Eliodoro Matte Ossa's descendants) consolidated control of CMPC through the 20th century, building it alongside Banco de Chile and other family holdings into one of Latin America's most integrated family conglomerates. CMPC's expansion into Brazilian eucalyptus pulp (Guaíba expansion, completed 2019 at ~$3B cost) was the largest private industrial investment in Rio Grande do Sul's history, extending CMPC's supply chain beyond Chile into Brazil's vast eucalyptus plantation base.
