The Stamford alternator brand traces to Stamford Electric Tools Ltd., founded in 1904 in Stamford, Connecticut — an American company whose brand name became attached to British manufacturing as the company evolved. Stamford alternators were manufactured in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, and became dominant in the UK and global market through the mid-20th century industrial electrification wave. Newage International acquired Stamford and later the AvK brand (a Dutch marine alternator maker, acquired 1996), before Cummins Inc. purchased Newage Stamford in 2012. The combined Stamford/AvK portfolio made Cummins Generator Technologies the world's largest industrial AC alternator manufacturer.
