    Engine OEM (Cummins, Caterpillar/Perkins, MTU, Volvo Penta, John Deere Power Systems) manufactures the prime mover; large engines (>1 MW) fabricated at dedicated high-investment facilities. Data center demand has caused 18–24 month engine delivery queues as of 2024–2025.

    Alternator sub-assembly

    Stator wound with enameled copper magnet wire; rotor assembled with excitation windings or PME cap; frame machined; brushless exciter and AVR integrated. Major alternator OEMs (Cummins/Stamford, Nidec/Leroy-Somer, Mecc Alte) are separate from engine OEMs and serve multiple assemblers.

    Genset assembly (coupling, fuel, cooling)

    Engine and alternator bolted to common steel baseframe; coupled via SAE adaptor and flexible disc. Fuel system (day tank, common-rail injection, Bosch/Delphi components) integrated. Radiator and cooling system installed; large sets (>500 kW) may use remote radiators.

    Controls, ECM, and ATS integration

    Engine ECM (proprietary to Cummins/Cat/MTU) plus genset controller (Deep Sea Electronics/Generac, ComAp, Basler) installed. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) — sourced separately from ASCO/Schneider, Eaton, or Generac — shipped as package or site-installed. Wiring harness and control panel fabricated.

    Enclosure fabrication and acoustic canopy

    Steel housing fabricated (often by sub-contractors); sound-attenuating foam and exhaust system installed. Large units (>1 MW) may be shipped in sections and field-assembled on concrete pads.

    Factory load bank testing & commissioning

    Generator run at rated kW under resistive/reactive load bank; witnessed by customer or third-party inspector. FEMA has documented that many standby generators failed to start or run satisfactorily post-disaster due to deferred maintenance or commissioning defects.
