Did you know2024
The family behind the world's orange juice also controls one of the world's biggest banana brands. In 2015 the Cutrale Group, with banking partner Safra, bought Chiquita Brands — so the same private Brazilian house that dominates global FCOJ is also a top-tier fresh-produce and banana player. Few shoppers connect the unbranded juice concentrate inside their store-brand OJ to the Chiquita sticker on their bananas, but both trace to one ownership group. [verify: SEC filings + trade press confirm Cutrale-Safra Chiquita Jan 2015]
Just Drinks ↗Incident2024
In 2024 orange juice became a textbook supply shock: NY FCOJ futures hit multi-decade records (intraday ~$4.92/lb) as citrus greening (Huanglongbing/HLB) hollowed out groves in BOTH Florida (17+ years of HLB) and Brazil, where the 2024/25 crop was forecast ~24% lower (~232M boxes) on disease plus drought and heat. Stocks ran so thin that major OJ makers began reformulating with mandarin and other fruits — a near-universal breakfast staple destabilized by a single bacterial tree disease. [verify: Brazil 232M/-24% (Fundecitrus); FCOJ ~.9 record confirmed]
FreshFruitPortal ↗Concentration2024
The world's orange juice runs through a tiny oligopoly: Cutrale (the largest), Citrosuco, and Louis Dreyfus together control most global FCOJ trade, almost all of it processed from Brazil's São Paulo citrus belt. With Florida — the #2 origin — in long structural decline, global OJ supply has narrowed to essentially one Brazilian growing region handled by three firms, who even run dedicated refrigerated juice-tanker fleets out of Santos. There is no diversified backup origin at scale. [verify: Three firms control ~75% global FCOJ from Brazil; confirmed Public Eye/Fruitnet (Citrosuco may be #1 not Cutrale)]
