Cyclolab Ltd., founded in Budapest, Hungary, is a leading research and development organization for cyclodextrins — cyclic oligosaccharide molecules produced from corn starch through enzymatic conversion, whose interior cavity can form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic drug molecules to improve their water solubility. Cyclodextrins are a defining example of a pharmaceutical enabling technology that is almost entirely unknown outside the pharmaceutical chemistry community: they convert poorly water-soluble drugs (many of the most clinically important compounds are hydrophobic) into injectable or oral formulations. Sulfobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin (SBECD) is the excipient in Gilead Sciences' remdesivir (Veklury) IV formulation — the first antiviral approved by the FDA for COVID-19 treatment. Without SBECD, remdesivir cannot be dissolved for intravenous administration. When remdesivir demand surged globally in 2020, SBECD supply became a constraining factor for remdesivir production — and SBECD production depends on beta-cyclodextrin upstream and specialized sulfobutylether chemistry. Cyclolab, as one of the specialized cyclodextrin research and production entities in Europe, operates in the narrow industrial niche where corn starch processing intersects with pharmaceutical formulation chemistry to enable treatments for conditions ranging from antifungal infections (voriconazole uses SBECD) to COVID antivirals.
