    Daiichi Kigenso Kagaku Kogyo (meaning "First Rare Element Chemical Industry") is a Japanese zirconium and rare earth compound specialist whose products appear in five unrelated industries without being publicly associated with any of them. Their yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powder is the dominant material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) — the electrolyte membrane through which oxygen ions conduct at 700-1000C — making them an upstream supplier to the hydrogen economy. The same zirconia chemistry, in a different particle size and sintering profile, is the primary material in the all-ceramic dental crown market (zirconia crowns have largely replaced metal-ceramic restorations in dentistry). Their cerium oxide polishing powder is used to polish optical lenses, semiconductor wafers, and precision glass. And zirconia thermal barrier coatings (ZrO2-Y2O3 applied by plasma spray) protect gas turbine blades in jet engines and power generation turbines. Daiichi Kigenso is part of the Sojitz Corporation group (one of Japan's major sogo shosha / general trading companies), which provides access to zircon sand sourcing from Australia and South Africa — the primary raw material for all zirconium chemical production.
