The ASR Group (American Sugar Refining) and its Domino Sugar brand are controlled by the Fanjul family — Cuban-Americans whose family had been among Cuba's largest sugarcane landowners before Fidel Castro nationalized the Cuban sugar industry in 1959-1960. The Fanjul family fled Cuba after Castro's revolution and arrived in Florida with enough capital and knowledge to begin rebuilding in the US sugar industry. They purchased farmland in South Florida's Lake Okeechobee sugarcane belt, built processing infrastructure, and eventually acquired the American Sugar Refining Company (which owned the Domino Sugar brand, founded 1900) and C&H Sugar (Pacific Coast brand). The Fanjul brothers Alfonso and José became among the most politically connected agricultural interests in the United States, supporting both Republican and Democratic administrations while advocating for US sugar import tariffs and quotas that protect domestic producers. The family's political influence is exemplified by the well-documented claim that Alfonso Fanjul Sr. received a phone call from President Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky affair — an incident documented in independent counsel Kenneth Starr's report. A Cuban exile family's reconstruction of their pre-revolution agricultural empire now controls the white granulated sugar in most American kitchens.
