Doosan Electro-Materials Co., Ltd. (Icheon, Gyeonggi-do South Korea; subsidiary of Doosan Group) is South Korea's primary ABF substrate film producer and the only significant non-Japanese competitor in the global ABF market. Doosan Electro-Materials produces CCL (Copper Clad Laminate), prepreg, and ABF-type build-up films for FC-BGA advanced package substrates. Doosan Group's electronics materials subsidiary benefits from Korean semiconductor supply chain proximity (Samsung, SK Hynix substrate assemblers). Doosan Electro-Materials was established in the 1980s as a PCB laminate producer and entered the FC-BGA substrate film market in the 2010s as demand from Korean chip packaging companies grew.

Doosan Group is one of Korea's oldest and most diversified conglomerates. Its subsidiaries span: Doosan Enerbility (formerly Doosan Heavy Industries) — which manufactures nuclear power plant steam generators and turbines, heavy industrial power equipment, and is developing small modular reactors (SMRs); Doosan Bobcat — the world's largest maker of compact construction equipment (skid-steer loaders, mini-excavators), headquartered in North Dakota; and Doosan Electro-Materials — the only non-Japanese manufacturer of ABF-type films for advanced semiconductor packaging. The same Korean conglomerate that makes the steam generator inside a nuclear power plant also makes the insulating film inside an advanced semiconductor package, and makes the compact construction equipment used to dig foundations for both the nuclear plant and the semiconductor fab. Nuclear, semiconductor, and construction equipment supply chains converging in one Korean conglomerate is unusual even among Korean chaebol.

  • Origin2023

Doosan Electro-Materials was established in the 1980s in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do as a copper clad laminate producer serving Korea's growing PCB industry. The company entered advanced semiconductor packaging films (CCL and build-up films for FC-BGA substrates) in the 2010s as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's package substrate suppliers sought non-Japanese alternatives to Ajinomoto's ABF dominance. Doosan Electro-Materials is the only significant non-Japanese manufacturer of ABF-equivalent films qualified for advanced semiconductor packaging — positioning it as Korea's insurance against Japanese ABF supply constraints. The company is part of Doosan Group, the Korean conglomerate founded in 1896 originally as a general store in Seoul — the same conglomerate whose corporate descendants now include nuclear power plant steam generators (Doosan Enerbility), construction equipment (Bobcat), and semiconductor packaging materials (Doosan Electro-Materials).
