The ARA and DHA products that DSM-Firmenich sells under life'sDHA and related brands ultimately trace to Martek Biosciences Corporation, a Columbia, Maryland biotech company founded in 1985 by research scientists from NASA and the Naval Research Laboratory. Martek was founded specifically to develop nutritional products from microalgae and fungi -- the founders' insight was that ocean microorganisms (algae, fungi) that naturally synthesized DHA and ARA could be industrially fermented to produce human-compatible omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Martek's Schizochytrium DHA and Mortierella alpina ARA were the world's first commercial algal/fungal omega-3/omega-6 products; Martek's patents (filing dates 1991-1996) created the commercial infant formula DHA+ARA supplementation market. DSM acquired Martek for $1.09B in 2011. DSM then merged with Firmenich (the Swiss fragrance company founded in 1895) in 2023 to create DSM-Firmenich -- meaning NASA scientists' microalgae research from the 1980s ultimately became part of a combined entity that makes both infant formula omega-3 AND the perfume in luxury fragrances.
