DuPont was founded in 1802 by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont on the Brandywine Creek in Delaware as a gunpowder manufacturer using a French process, making it one of the oldest continuously operating large US industrial companies. DuPont supplied gunpowder to the US military in essentially every major conflict from the War of 1812 through WWI. Its pivot to specialty chemicals in the early 20th century (nylon, neoprene, Teflon, Freon) came from reinvesting gunpowder profits into fundamental research -- DuPont's central research lab, founded in 1903, was an unusual and expensive bet that pure science would eventually produce commercial products. Tyvek was discovered in 1955 and commercialized in 1967 as a flash-spun HDPE nonwoven by researcher Jim White. Today this single material -- invented serendipitously in a lab built on gunpowder profits from the War of 1812 -- is the only approved sterile barrier substrate for approximately 90% of global medical device packaging.

DuPont spun off specialty products and changed its name, but never sold the Tyvek medical business — making a 220-year-old chemical company the structural gatekeeper of every sterile OR in the world DuPont was founded in 1802 as a gunpowder manufacturer. Its 1955 invention of Tyvek (initially for construction wrap and envelopes) was later adapted for medical packaging in the 1970s. Despite multiple spin-offs (Chemours for fluorochemicals, Corteva for agriculture), DuPont retained the Tyvek medical packaging franchise through its 2017 merger with Dow and subsequent 2019 split into three companies (DuPont, Dow, Corteva). DuPont's medical packaging unit represents a small share of its revenue (~3%) but is the single largest choke point in the global sterile device supply chain by number of products affected.
