    Raw material sourcing and compounding

    Medical-grade polymers (polypropylene, nitrile, silicone, PVC, polyester) and specialty chemicals (ethylene oxide) sourced and compounded to biocompatibility specifications. Materials must meet ISO 10993 biological evaluation standards.

  2. 02

    Component manufacturing

    Gloves: nitrile latex dipped onto hand-shaped formers, vulcanized, and stripped. Gowns/drapes: polypropylene spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS) nonwoven fabric laminated and cut-and-sewn. Sutures: polymer extruded into monofilament or braided; absorbable sutures (polyglycolic acid) degrade in tissue over days to months.

    Device assembly and clean-room packaging

    Components assembled in ISO Class 7 or 8 clean rooms; wound contact items (sutures, sponges) assembled under stricter conditions. Devices double-wrapped in medical-grade Tyvek® or paper-film pouches that allow sterilant gas penetration but block bacteria.

    Sterilization

    Two primary methods: (1) Ethylene oxide (EtO) gas at 50-60°C penetrates packaging and denatures microbial DNA; used for ~50% of all sterile medical devices including anything heat-sensitive. (2) Gamma/e-beam irradiation for products tolerant of ionizing radiation. Steam autoclave for metal instruments. Each batch undergoes biological indicator (BI) testing.

    Sterilization aeration and quarantine

    EtO-sterilized devices must aerate (outgas residual EtO) for 8-48 hours in ventilated cells before release; EtO residue limits set by ISO 10993-7. Batch release requires sterility testing (USP <71>) and BI confirmation. Total cycle time: 1-7 days.

  6. 06

    Regulatory clearance and labeling

    Each device type requires FDA 510(k) clearance or PMA approval (US), CE marking (EU), or national equivalent. Labels must include lot number, sterility indicator, expiry date, and storage conditions. Re-labeling or sterilization changes require new regulatory submissions.

  7. 07

    Cold-chain distribution

    Sterile supplies shipped in sealed cases with humidity and temperature monitoring; surgical implants may require specific storage conditions. Hospital distribution centers maintain consignment stock; instrument sets tracked by RFID or barcode to OR trays. Shelf life: typically 3-5 years.
