Saudi Arabia's entire domestic water supply -- the kingdom has virtually no renewable surface water -- depends on RO desalination using membranes predominantly supplied by DuPont. If DuPont's Edina Minnesota manufacturing complex experienced a major disruption, replacement membrane capacity from Toray and Hydranautics could not absorb the shortfall within months, meaning large desalination plants would face reduced throughput.

    The FilmTec RO membrane -- the technology at the core of DuPont Water Solutions' dominant market position -- was invented not at DuPont but at North Star Research Institute in Minneapolis by researcher John Cadotte in 1977, under a US Office of Saline Water grant. Cadotte's thin-film composite (TFC) membrane structure (a polyamide layer on a polysulfone support) was so superior to cellulose acetate membranes that it became the industry standard for all spiral-wound RO systems globally. FilmTec Corporation was formed to commercialize the patent and DuPont acquired it in 1985. The original government-funded research grant for water desalination created the technology that DuPont now uses to supply 55-60% of global RO membranes -- from municipal water treatment to semiconductor ultra-pure water to pharmaceutical WFI production. A Minneapolis research lab funded by a 1970s energy department office produced the material that today purifies the water in Dubai, TSMC's fab in Taiwan, and Pfizer's injectable drug manufacturing.
