Elanco's Rumensin (monensin) is one of the most widely used feed additives in beef cattle production globally — it's an ionophore antibiotic that improves feed efficiency and controls coccidiosis in cattle feedlots. Posilac (recombinant bovine somatotropin — rBST, also called bovine growth hormone) is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring dairy cow hormone that, when injected every two weeks, increases milk production by 10-15% per cow. Posilac was developed by Monsanto's life sciences division and approved by FDA in 1993 after a 9-year review — the longest animal drug review in FDA history at the time. Eli Lilly (through Elanco) acquired Posilac from Monsanto in 2008 for $300M. Elanco inherited Posilac as part of the Eli Lilly Animal Health operations when Elanco spun off in 2018. The EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most developed nations have banned rBST use in dairy cattle — citing animal welfare concerns (increased mastitis and lameness incidence). The US is the only major dairy nation where rBST remains in commercial use. This creates a situation where Elanco is the sole manufacturer and distributor of a drug that is simultaneously approved in the world's largest dairy market (US, using ~15% of cows) and banned in virtually every other significant dairy market globally — making Posilac a US-only pharmaceutical chokepoint with no international supply chain alternative.
