Enbridge Inc. (TSX/NYSE: ENB) was founded in 1949 in Calgary as Interprovincial Pipe Line Company, built specifically to transport Alberta's first commercial oil production (Leduc oil, discovered 1947) to Eastern Canada and US markets. The company grew through construction of the Lakehead Pipeline into the US Midwest in 1950 — one of the largest pipeline construction projects of the early postwar era. Enbridge acquired natural gas distribution assets (Consumers Gas, now Enbridge Gas Inc.) in 1989-1998, transforming from a crude oil pipeline into an integrated energy infrastructure company.
