  • Did you know2022

EUROPIPE's X70 and X80 grade large-diameter LSAW pipeline steel — the pipe used for natural gas transmission across Europe and North America — meets the identical mechanical specification required for dedicated hydrogen transmission pipelines. The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) plan, which targets 28,000+ km of hydrogen transmission pipeline by 2030 primarily through repurposing existing natural gas pipelines, relies on the fact that existing X70/X80 grade natural gas line pipe is hydrogen-compatible at operating pressures up to approximately 200 bar (subject to hydrogen embrittlement studies by wall thickness and grade). New hydrogen-dedicated greenfield pipeline segments in the EHB are specified to the same EUROPIPE API 5L/ISO 3183 grades as natural gas pipe. EUROPIPE — whose entire business is natural gas transmission pipe — is simultaneously the default supplier for European hydrogen infrastructure buildout, meaning the pipe for Europe's planned fossil gas replacement is ordered from the same company, to the same specification, as the pipe that carries the fossil gas being replaced.

  • Concentration2022

EUROPIPE supplied the pipe for Nord Stream 1 (opened 2011) and Nord Stream 2 (completed 2021, never commercially operated, physically destroyed by sabotage in September 2022). As the dominant Western European large-diameter LSAW pipe producer, EUROPIPE was also the primary available supplier for the EU's current gas infrastructure needs — the same company that built the Russia-Germany pipeline that created European gas dependency is also the company that supplies pipe for the European gas storage expansion and LNG import terminal connections intended to replace Russian supply. Following the Nord Stream sabotage, EUROPIPE's pipe (and the Dillinger heavy plate that goes into it) is on critical path for European energy security infrastructure in both the near-term (LNG connections) and long-term (hydrogen backbone) simultaneously, with no comparable European alternative to EUROPIPE's LSAW production capacity.

  • Origin2024

EUROPIPE GmbH was established in 1991 as a joint venture between Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG (the pipe subsidiary of Mannesmann AG) and Dillinger Hütte GTS (Dillinger steelworks, a subsidiary of Saarstahl). The Mannesmann name traces to the most consequential innovation in industrial pipe history: in 1885, brothers Reinhard and Max Mannesmann invented the skew-rolling process for manufacturing seamless steel tubes — allowing a solid steel billet to be pierced and stretched into a seamless pipe without welding. Mannesmann's seamless pipe technology made modern oil and gas transmission infrastructure possible. After Vodafone acquired Mannesmann in 2000 (in the largest hostile takeover in European history up to that point) and spun off the industrial assets, Mannesmannröhren was absorbed into Salzgitter AG. EUROPIPE thus sits at the intersection of 19th-century German steel innovation and 21st-century energy infrastructure — the heir to Mannesmann's pipe manufacturing legacy makes the large-diameter welded transmission pipe that moves natural gas across continents.
