India's COVID-19 second wave (April-May 2021) created what the Indian Supreme Court described as an 'oxygen crisis' — a national emergency in which hospital patients died for lack of oxygen delivery, not lack of oxygen gas. The Allahabad High Court attributed at least 60 deaths at a single Agra hospital to oxygen shortage in a single night. Everest Kanto Cylinder and other Indian manufacturers were directed by the Indian government to prioritize medical oxygen cylinder production, halting industrial cylinder output. The Indian government invoked the Essential Commodities Act and the Disaster Management Act to commandeer cylinder distribution. The crisis demonstrated that medical oxygen cylinders — the steel and aluminum containers, not just the gas — are national security infrastructure: India had insufficient cylinder inventory to buffer demand spikes even with adequate liquid oxygen production capacity. Post-crisis, the Indian government established a National Medical Oxygen Stockpile policy and targeted medical cylinder reserves.

Everest Kanto Cylinder was founded in 1978 in Mumbai by the Kanoria family, initially manufacturing high-pressure industrial gas cylinders for India's growing industrial sector. The company expanded into CNG (compressed natural gas) cylinders in the 1990s as India's government promoted CNG as a cleaner fuel alternative for buses and autos in Delhi and Mumbai. EKC subsequently expanded internationally with operations in the US (Houston, Texas), UAE, China, and Egypt, becoming one of Asia's largest high-pressure cylinder manufacturers and a significant global CNG cylinder supplier.
