  • Origin2023

FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies traces its roots to the Wuhan Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (WIPT), a state research institute established in 1974 as China was beginning to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure. WIPT developed China's early optical fiber and communications research capabilities in the 1970s-80s, and FiberHome was commercialized from this research base in the 1990s to bring the technology to market. FiberHome is a subsidiary of Datang Telecom Group, which is itself affiliated with the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology -- the same state research network that developed China's TD-SCDMA 3G standard and has historically served both civilian communications and Chinese military/state communications requirements. The US added FiberHome to the Entity List in 2020 citing national security concerns -- a designation that restricts certain US technology exports to FiberHome -- because the same fiber optic and telecom equipment company that builds civilian broadband in Africa and Southeast Asia also potentially supplies Chinese state communications infrastructure.
