Flint Hills Resources' Corpus Christi aromatics complex extracts benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) from crude oil refinery reformate streams — the same BTX that underpins the global petrochemical supply chain. Toluene from FHR Corpus Christi flows into toluene diisocyanate (TDI) production at downstream chemical plants, which then becomes polyurethane foam for mattresses, car seats, insulation, and furniture. Para-xylene (PX) from the same facility feeds terephthalic acid (PTA) plants, which produce the PET resin in every plastic bottle, polyester clothing fiber, and food packaging tray. The private Koch Industries subsidiary operating a Texas aromatics complex is positioned between the crude oil wellhead and: American mattresses, fast-fashion polyester clothing, bottled water packaging, and automotive seat foam — all flowing from the same vacuum tower and catalytic reformer at Corpus Christi.

Flint Hills Resources (FHR) is the refining and chemicals arm of Koch Industries — the privately held Wichita, Kansas conglomerate that is the second-largest privately held company in the United States. Koch Industries grew from Fred Koch's oil field equipment and refining business in the 1930s. Flint Hills was carved out as a Koch subsidiary in 2002 when Koch reorganized its energy businesses. The Pine Bend (Rosemount, Minnesota) refinery, acquired by Koch in 1969, is one of the largest inland refineries in the US and was built specifically to process heavy Canadian crude oil — initially from the Athabasca oil sands long before the term "tar sands" entered public consciousness. Koch Industries' vision of processing cheap, landlocked heavy Canadian crude at Pine Bend before other refiners recognized the opportunity is a classic example of industrial arbitrage: seeing supply chain geography before the market does.
