Flowserve Corporation was assembled through decades of acquisitions of specialized pump and valve companies, including Durco (DuPont spinoff known for corrosion-resistant pump designs), BW/IP International, Ingersoll-Dresser Pumps (formerly Ingersoll-Rand pumps), Pacific Wietz, and Mark Controls. The Mark Controls subsidiary traces to Skokie, Illinois and makes severe-service control valves for nuclear power plants -- components with 40-50 year service lives and extremely limited alternative suppliers. When nuclear plants undergo refueling outages, Flowserve's Mark Controls valves are among the long-lead replacement items that constrain maintenance schedules. The company grew by recognizing that aggregating specialized niche pump brands under one service and parts network created customer lock-in: a refinery that uses Flowserve's Durco pumps, Mark Controls valves, and Flowserve's seals has significant switching costs across all three categories.
