The GAF roofing brand traces back to a Cold War-era asset seizure. GAF Corporation was originally a subsidiary of I.G. Farben, the German chemical conglomerate that was dissolved after WWII. The US government seized its American assets under the Alien Property Custodian Act and eventually privatized them. The resulting company evolved through chemicals, photographic film, and real estate before a series of spinoffs and acquisitions landed the roofing division in the hands of Standard Industries in the 1990s. Today most homeowners and contractors who buy GAF shingles are unaware the brand has roots in confiscated Nazi chemical company assets.
