Producer
Ganfeng Lithium
Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. (SHEX: 002460, HKEX: 1772; HQ Xinyu, Jiangxi, China; ~$5B revenue) is China's largest and the world's third-largest lithium producer, with dominant capacity in lithium hydroxide conversion. Ganfeng operates multiple LiOH conversion facilities in Xinyu (Jiangxi), Xinjiang, and Chongqing — collectively processing imported spodumene from Mount Marion (WA; 50% JV with Mineral Resources) and brine concentrate into battery-grade LiOH·H2O. Ganfeng supplies LiOH to BMW, Tesla, LG Energy Solution, CATL, and BYD for NMC-811 and NCA cathode manufacturing. Ganfeng's vertical integration — from Australian spodumene mining through Chinese conversion to battery material supply — exemplifies China's control of the LiOH processing chain. Ganfeng also produces lithium metal (for solid-state battery anodes) and other specialty lithium chemicals. Source: Ganfeng Lithium Annual Report 2023.

Ganfeng Lithium Xinyu LiOH Conversion Complex (Jiangxi, China) →
CNXinyu, Jiangxi Province · processing
Ganfeng Lithium's primary lithium hydroxide monohydrate conversion complex in Xinyu, Jiangxi Province — the company's headquarters city. Ganfeng operates multiple conversion lines at Xinyu for both LiOH·H2O and Li2CO3, processing imported spodumene from Mount Marion (WA; 50% JV with MinRes) and other feedstock. Additional LiOH capacity in Xinjiang (processing domestic Qinghai brine concentrates) and Chongqing. Total Ganfeng LiOH capacity estimated at 100,000-120,000 t/year across all Chinese facilities. Serves BMW, Tesla, LG Energy Solution, CATL, and BYD with battery-grade LiOH for NMC-811 and NCA cathode production. The Xinyu complex is Ganfeng's largest single manufacturing site. Ganfeng produces both battery-grade LiOH (for EV NMC/NCA cathode manufacturing) and lithium metal (Li0, elemental metallic lithium) — two products from the same lithium chemistry with radically different supply chains: (1) Battery-grade LiOH — for EV transportation and energy storage; BMW, Tesla, and CATL need LiOH for high-nickel cathode synthesis; this connects Ganfeng to the clean energy transition; (2) Lithium metal — used in solid-state battery anode research (next-generation batteries with lithium metal anodes), primary (non-rechargeable) lithium batteries (the lithium batteries in cardiac pacemakers, military field equipment, and smoke detectors), and certain specialty chemicals; lithium metal is also of interest in tritium breeding for fusion energy research (Li-6 enrichment). The same Chinese company supplies BMW's NMC-811 cathode LiOH AND lithium metal for pacemaker batteries and next-generation solid-state battery research. Ganfeng's vertically integrated path from Australian spodumene mining through Chinese conversion to battery-grade and specialty lithium puts it at the intersection of EV supply chains, medical device supply chains, and emerging solid-state battery development.
Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. ↗Origin2023
Ganfeng Lithium was founded in 2000 in Xinyu, Jiangxi Province by Li Liangbin — a graduate chemist who had worked at a state-owned lithium company and decided to start a private enterprise focused on specialty lithium chemicals. Ganfeng's early focus was specialty chemicals (n-butyllithium for organic synthesis, lithium bromide for industrial refrigeration) rather than battery materials. The battery pivot came as Chinese EV demand emerged in the 2010s, and Ganfeng built LiOH conversion capacity ahead of the expected demand curve. The key strategic move was acquiring a 50% stake in the Mount Marion hard-rock spodumene mine in Western Australia (with Mineral Resources Ltd) in 2015-2016 — making Ganfeng the first significant Chinese lithium company to own equity in an Australian mining operation. This Australian upstream stake proved prescient: it provided secure spodumene feedstock for Ganfeng's Chinese LiOH conversion capacity as spot spodumene prices surged in 2021-2022. Australia-China relations significantly deteriorated after 2020 (trade disputes, Huawei bans, COVID-19 origin disputes) — yet the Mount Marion JV continued operating, demonstrating that bilateral critical mineral dependencies can outlast diplomatic tensions.
