Gelest is primarily known in academic and biotech circles as a specialty silicone/PDMS supplier for microfluidics chips and soft lithography — supplying Harvard Wyss Institute, MIT, and thousands of research labs making lab-on-chip devices. But Gelest's metal-organic chemistry division produces CVD/ALD precursors for semiconductor manufacturing: hafnium alkoxides for hafnium oxide (HfO2) high-k gate dielectric deposition in sub-10nm CMOS logic; zirconium organics for DRAM capacitor dielectrics; titanium and tantalum alkoxides for metal barrier and liner layers in copper interconnects. These precursors are deposited atom-by-atom via atomic layer deposition (ALD) in TSMC, Intel, and Samsung fabs making the world's most advanced chips. A single Gelest organometallic compound may be present in every 3nm and 5nm logic chip produced globally — the same company whose PDMS kits sit in graduate student microfluidics labs supplies atomic-layer precursors to the most technically demanding semiconductor manufacturing processes in existence. Mitsubishi Chemical's acquisition of Gelest was explicitly to combine these capabilities with their existing semiconductor materials (photoresists, CMP slurries) for a vertically integrated advanced-node fab materials offering.

Gelest, Inc. was founded in 1991 in the Philadelphia suburb of Tullytown, Pennsylvania by silicon chemistry specialists who wanted to build a catalog supplier for specialty silane and silicone compounds that large chemical companies (Dow, Shin-Etsu, Momentive) didn't make at research scale. The company built an unusually broad catalog — over 2,500 products spanning silanes, silicones, and metal-organics — targeting university research labs and specialty chemical R&D departments who needed small quantities of custom silicon-based compounds that couldn't be purchased from major suppliers. Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings acquired Gelest in 2016 to gain access to both the specialty silicone catalog and Gelest's metal-organic CVD/ALD precursor business (which feeds semiconductor thin-film deposition processes). Gelest is now part of Mitsubishi Chemical Group's Performance Polymers division, operating as a specialty chemicals subsidiary while maintaining its catalog-supplier identity within the broader semiconductor materials portfolio.
