Generac Holdings Inc. (Waukesha, WI; NYSE: GNRC; ~$4.0B revenue 2023) is the dominant residential and light commercial ATS manufacturer in the United States — a consequence of Generac becoming the #1 residential standby generator brand after Hurricane Sandy (2012) and subsequent utility reliability events. Generac's RTSW, RTG, and RXSW series transfer switches (100A to 400A residential service-entrance rated) ship with virtually every Generac residential standby generator sold in the US. Generac's market position is residential-focused: it is NOT the primary brand in Tier III/IV data centers or hospitals (those markets are Eaton/Schneider/ASCO). Generac's manufacturing is primarily in Waukesha, WI and Jefferson, WI, with additional manufacturing in Oshkosh, WI acquired from Country Home Products. Generac also acquired Pika Energy (battery storage) and Chilicon Power (grid-tied inverters) to diversify beyond backup power.

Generac is the dominant US residential standby generator company (powering homes when the grid fails — the household resilience supply chain), but the same Generac PWRcell home battery systems and grid services platform now position Generac as a distributed energy resource (DER) company. Generac has partnered with utilities for virtual power plant programs where homeowner PWRcell batteries can be aggregated and dispatched to meet grid peak demand — the same battery that stores solar energy for individual homeowner backup is simultaneously a grid asset that utilities control during emergencies. The household energy resilience supply chain and the electric grid reliability supply chain are being integrated through Generac's evolution from generator company to smart energy platform.

  • Origin2023

Generac was founded in 1959 in Waukesha, Wisconsin by Robert Kern, initially as a small engine manufacturer serving recreational (portable generator, camping) and light construction markets. The company remained relatively niche until Hurricane Katrina devastated Gulf Coast communities in 2005, creating mass consumer awareness of whole-home standby backup power. Generac aggressively marketed residential standby generators after Katrina and through subsequent extreme weather events (Superstorm Sandy 2012, Texas freeze 2021) — transforming from a B2B industrial product to a consumer brand that homeowners in hurricane and tornado zones recognize. By 2021, Generac commanded ~70% of the US residential standby generator market.
