Germains' seed pelleting technology — applying successive layers of mineral filler and polymer binder to small, irregularly-shaped seeds to form precise spherical pellets of defined diameter — uses the same pan-coating and fluidized-bed coating engineering as pharmaceutical multi-unit pellet system (MUPS) manufacturing. Pharmaceutical sustained-release tablets are often made by film-coating drug-loaded beads or pellets in the same type of coating equipment used to pellet seeds. Glatt, O'Hara Technologies, and Vector Corporation make coating equipment used in both seed pelleting and pharmaceutical pellet manufacturing — the same machines, operating on identical fluid dynamics and polymer film formation principles. Germains' process engineers and pharmaceutical coating engineers operate on the same technical substrate; seed pelleting know-how transfers directly to pharmaceutical pellet coating production.

Germains Seed Technology, founded in 1871 in King's Lynn, Norfolk UK, is one of the oldest seed technology companies in the world. The company's Norfolk location is deliberate — East Anglia is the heart of UK sugar beet production, and Germains was founded to serve local sugar beet seed production needs. They pioneered commercial seed pelleting for sugar beet in the 1950s, enabling the mechanized precision seeding that replaced hand-thinning (previously, clusters of seed were planted and excess seedlings manually removed — a labor-intensive bottleneck). Germains was acquired by Associated British Foods (ABF) — the FTSE 100 conglomerate that also owns Primark, British Sugar, and Allied Mills. The same corporate parent that operates one of the world's largest fashion retail chains (Primark) also owns the company that coats the sugar beet seeds that supply ABF's own British Sugar plants. ABF's vertical integration runs from seed enhancement through sugar production through confectionery.

The global seed pelleting market for precision vegetables (lettuce, carrot, onion, celery) is heavily concentrated: Germains (ABF) and Incotec (acquired by Croda International in 2021) serve the majority of global vegetable pelleting demand. Precision vegetable farming — mechanical planting of a single seed per hole at precise spacing, without manual thinning — is only possible because seed pelleting creates uniform, machine-plantable spheres from seeds that are naturally non-uniform in size and shape. Every precisely-spaced lettuce in a supermarket was planted from a pelleted seed. The supply chain for precision vegetable production (the supply chain that allows salad to be mechanically harvested) depends on a small number of seed enhancement facilities in the UK, Netherlands, and US.
