  1. 01

    Parental Inbred Line Development

    Plant breeders develop pure inbred lines through 6–8 generations of self-pollination and selection, stabilizing genetic traits. Proprietary parental lines are the core IP asset. Maintained under strict isolation in controlled breeding nurseries, including winter nurseries in Chile and Hawaii to run year-round breeding cycles. Takes 5–12 years per new inbred line.

    Hybrid Cross and Controlled Pollination

    Male and female parent lines are planted in isolation fields at ~1:4 ratio. Female plants are detasseled mechanically or via cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) genes to prevent self-pollination. Cross-pollination produces F1 hybrid seed on female rows only. Fields must be geographically isolated from commercial corn by at least 660 feet to prevent pollen contamination.

    Seed Harvest and Ear Drying

    Female rows are harvested at physiological maturity. Seed corn ears are harvested at 30–35% moisture and transported to central processing facilities. Ears are dried in batch or continuous-flow dryers. Moisture is reduced to 12–13% for safe storage. Drying is energy-intensive and time-critical — a ~3-week harvest window with no deferral option.

    Shelling, Cleaning, and Sizing

    Dried ears are mechanically shelled to remove kernels. Seeds pass through screens, gravity separators, and air classifiers to remove broken seeds, cob pieces, and dust. Seeds are sorted by size into flat, round, and large-round grades to optimize precision planter singulation. Uniformity is critical for modern high-speed planting equipment.

    Germination and Purity Testing

    Samples from each seed lot undergo AOSA germination tests, tetrazolium (TZ) viability tests, and genetic purity checks. Commercial corn seed requires ≥90% germination. DNA fingerprinting may verify hybrid identity. Lots failing thresholds are rejected or blended. 7–14 days for germination tests.

    Seed Treatment Application

    Approved lots are coated with proprietary seed treatment packages: (1) fungicides (fludioxonil, metalaxyl-M, sedaxane) to control damping-off; (2) insecticides, predominantly neonicotinoids (thiamethoxam, clothianidin, imidacloprid) applied to 79–100% of U.S. corn acres; (3) biological inoculants (Bacillus subtilis, rhizobium); and (4) polymer binders and colorants. Applied inline at packaging speed.

    Packaging and Distribution

    Treated seed is weighed into standardized units (80,000-kernel units for corn; 50-lb bags for soybeans), hermetically sealed, and labeled with variety, lot number, treatment disclosure, and phytosanitary certificates. Cold-chain storage required for some biological treatments. Orders typically placed 6–18 months before planting; peak shipping October–March.
