Gharda Chemicals was founded in 1964 in Dombivli, Maharashtra by Dr. Keki Gharda — a rare Indian entrepreneur who built a globally competitive specialty chemicals company in an era when Indian industrial policy was focused on import substitution and state enterprises. Dr. Gharda, a chemical engineer, recognized that India's growing agricultural sector needed domestic sources of crop protection chemicals that were otherwise imported at high cost. Starting with synthesis of herbicide intermediates in the Dombivli MIDC industrial estate near Thane, the company expanded into pyrethroid insecticide manufacturing — the class of synthetic insecticides derived from natural pyrethrin compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers. Gharda became a global-scale pyrethroid manufacturer at exactly the moment when the WHO and UNICEF began procuring massive quantities of pyrethroid-treated bed nets for malaria prevention in sub-Saharan Africa — creating simultaneous demand from agricultural and public health purchasers for the same active ingredients. Dr. Gharda remained the controlling owner until his death in 2023 at age 88; Gharda Chemicals is one of the largest privately-owned specialty chemical companies in India with no institutional ownership.
