Glanbia traces to the Irish Dairy Board, established in 1960 as a state-supported body to organize Irish dairy exports. Ireland's dairy industry historically produced butter and cheese for UK and European markets. Glanbia demutualised and restructured through the 1990s, building a US presence through the Surprise Valley, Idaho cheese and whey operation -- one of the largest integrated cheese/whey facilities in the world -- to capture US dairy market scale advantages. The Idaho operation processes milk from dairy farmers across the US Pacific Northwest into cheese (primarily Cheddar for US food service) and whey protein (from the whey separated during cheese-making). The whey stream that was once a waste product became Glanbia's highest-value output: WPC-80 and WPI for infant formula and sports nutrition. EU milk quota abolition in 2015 further drove Irish dairy expansion, accelerating Ireland from a small island dairy exporter to one of the world's most intensive dairy production regions per capita. A 2015 Irish farmer cooperative became a global nutritional ingredients company with the largest cheese plant in the world in Idaho.
