Did you know2022
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals makes both the generics that treat eczema and the branded novel drugs that hope to replace them — its API facility in India supplies US competitors while its R&D pipeline targets the same patients Glenmark Pharmaceuticals occupies an unusual dual position in the topical dermatology supply chain: its Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) facility manufactures corticosteroid APIs and finished dose forms for the US generic market (including supply to Taro and Perrigo), while its branded division is developing novel biologics and small molecules for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis to compete with Dupixent (Dupilumab). This "innovator-generic" hybrid business model means Glenmark simultaneously supplies raw materials to the commodity generics market while investing in proprietary assets that would displace those generics. Its 2021 ANDA antitrust settlement included corticosteroid topicals — the same category where it manufactures APIs.
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals ↗Origin2023
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals was founded in 1977 in Mumbai by Gracias Saldanha, who started with a small tablet manufacturing operation. The company remained modest for two decades before Glenn Saldanha (founder's son) took over in 1999 and aggressively pursued the US generics market following the Hatch-Waxman Act opportunities. Glenmark's strategy was to target complex generics -- particularly topical dermatology products -- that required more specialized formulation expertise than simple oral tablets, where competition was intense. By 2005-2010 it had become one of the top 5 US market share holders in prescription topical steroids, supplying generic corticosteroid creams to American pharmacies from manufacturing facilities in Goa, India. In 2019 it separately incorporated its novel drug R&D activities as Ichnos Sciences, which focuses on bispecific antibodies and novel dermatology molecules -- positioning Glenmark simultaneously as a value generic manufacturer and a biotech drug developer.
