Strip the tantalum-capacitor supply chain to its base and it narrows to essentially two non-China producers of capacitor-grade powder: TANIOBIS (Germany/Japan) and Global Advanced Metals. GAM's distinctive strength is vertical integration — it controls tantalum mineral resources in Australia and runs the chain through to finished powder, giving a fully traceable, conflict-free, non-DRC and non-China supply path. For Western electronics and defense buyers worried about both conflict-mineral exposure and Chinese concentration, GAM is one of the very few suppliers that resolves both at once. The resilience of the entire tantalum-capacitor base for AI servers and military hardware rests on this two-company Western tier plus Chinese capacity.

Tantalum's role in electronics is not only the capacitor — it is also inside the chips themselves. Tantalum and tantalum-nitride are the standard diffusion-barrier and liner layers deposited under the copper interconnects of advanced logic and memory, and that deposition uses high-purity tantalum sputtering targets. GAM supplies tantalum into this metallization supply chain as well. So the same vertically integrated tantalum producer feeds both the discrete tantalum capacitors on a board and the atom-thin tantalum barrier films woven through the transistors of the chips on that same board — a single metal, and a single upstream supplier, appearing at two completely different layers of the same device.

Global Advanced Metals is the modern custodian of one of the oldest names in tantalum: it acquired the tantalum business of Cabot Corporation, the U.S. specialty-chemicals company whose Cabot Supermetals unit was for decades a pillar of Western tantalum processing (with operations in Boyertown, Pennsylvania and Japan). Re-based around Australian tantalum resources, GAM turned a legacy American minor-metals operation into a resource-backed, conflict-free supply business — a quiet example of how strategic-materials capacity gets preserved and re-nationalized as it changes hands rather than disappearing.
