Greif is one of the world's largest makers of industrial drums and bulk containers — and it is also a significant private timberland owner. Through its Land Management subsidiary, Soterra LLC, Greif holds a large timberland estate in the U.S. South, managing forests, selling timber and leasing land for hunting and recreation. Layered on top is a major Paper Packaging business making containerboard and recycled paperboard. So a company most people would file under "steel and plastic drums" is simultaneously a forestry/land business and a paper-packaging manufacturer — its drums move other industries' chemicals while, several segments over, it quietly owns and harvests forest. Few would guess a drum maker is also a landowner of that scale.

The real moat in industrial packaging is not the container — it is the UN certification on it. Bulk hazardous goods (pesticides, industrial chemicals, lubricants, corrosives) can only legally ship in packaging that has passed UN drop, stack, leakproof and hydrostatic tests for that hazard class, and switching a certified container supplier means re-qualifying the whole packaging-and-product combination. Greif, as one of a small number of global industrial-packaging makers with that certification capability and a reconditioning network, sits as a gatekeeper underneath the physical movement of bulk chemicals. The 2020–21 chemical upcycle showed the consequence directly: when drums and IBCs ran short, the chemicals inside them couldn't ship regardless of how much product was made.
