Camptotheca acuminata, the source of camptothecin API for oncology drugs, is also a widely planted ornamental and shade tree in southern China (nicknamed "happy tree" in Chinese — xi shu). Chinese municipal governments plant Camptotheca as boulevard trees, campus trees, and park plantings. The pharmaceutical API supply chain (commercial Camptotheca plantations in Guangxi for camptothecin extraction) and urban forestry use the same tree species. Haoshu International is located in Guangxi Province — the primary cultivation region for Camptotheca acuminata (xi shu, "happy tree"), a tree native to southern China. Camptothecin was first identified as an anti-cancer compound by Monroe Wall and Mansukh Wani at the Research Triangle Institute in 1966, using plant material collected by the US National Cancer Institute's natural products screening program — including specimens collected in China. The discovery created Chinese botanical extraction companies to process the tree's bark and wood for the semi-synthetic precursors to irinotecan (CPT-11) and topotecan, two important colon and ovarian cancer drugs. Chinese companies like Haoshu became critical upstream nodes in global oncology supply chains based on their geographic access to Camptotheca cultivation.
