Coconut shell activated carbon from Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia simultaneously purifies municipal drinking water (removing chlorination byproducts and pesticides from tap water in Germany, Japan, and the US) AND extracts gold from crushed ore in South American and African mines (carbon-in-leach / carbon-in-pulp gold recovery). The person drinking filtered tap water in Amsterdam and the gold miner in Ghana loading carbon into a leach tank are both depending on the same coconut-shell-derived material produced in Sri Lanka or Indonesia. When coconut harvests are poor (due to drought or pest outbreaks in Sri Lanka's coconut belt), gold miners and municipal water utilities simultaneously face activated carbon cost increases -- a supply chain connection that appears in neither gold commodity analysis nor water utility cost forecasting.

Haycarb PLC was founded in 1973 as a joint venture between Hayleys Group (a Sri Lankan conglomerate founded 1878) and a British activated carbon company, to convert the waste coconut shells from Sri Lanka's coconut processing industry into a value-added export product. Sri Lanka had abundant coconut shell waste from its copra (coconut oil) and desiccated coconut industry, but the shells were largely burned or discarded. Activated carbon made from coconut shells is structurally superior to coal-based carbon for water purification because coconut shells produce a highly microporous carbon with a greater surface area per gram, making it more effective at adsorbing small organic molecules. Haycarb built technology and capacity over 50 years to become one of the world's largest coconut shell carbon producers, with facilities in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia, exporting to 60+ countries.
