The Hengshui-Shijiazhuang corridor in Hebei became a major pharmaceutical chemical cluster in the 1990s-2000s, leveraging proximity to Beijing and Tianjin port access for export. Hebei Jiheng's APAP business runs the complete synthesis chain: benzene/toluene (petrochemical input) → nitrobenzene → aniline → para-aminophenol (PAP) → acetaminophen (APAP). This means a petrochemical refinery input (benzene, the aromatic fraction from oil refining) is the ultimate source of the acetaminophen in a Tylenol tablet — the same crude oil that powers cars provides the benzene from which Hebei Jiheng synthesizes the world's most common pain reliever.
