China produces approximately 80-90% of global salicylic acid, making it the dominant source of the primary precursor for the world's most consumed pharmaceutical — aspirin. The US imports the vast majority of its aspirin API (acetylsalicylic acid) and its salicylic acid intermediate from China. While aspirin itself was invented in Germany and for decades was primarily manufactured in Western countries, production has systematically migrated to China as lower production costs and China's phenol/chemical industry scale advantages prevailed. US and European pharmaceutical manufacturers are largely dependent on Chinese salicylic acid for their aspirin production. The pharmaceutical ingredient concentration in China, demonstrated most dramatically with antibiotics (90%+ of amoxicillin and penicillin API) and vitamin C (90%+ of world supply), extends to aspirin's chemistry — the oldest and most trusted pharmaceutical molecule in the world is now supply-chain-dependent on Chinese chemical production capacity.

Salicylic acid's journey from willow bark to Hebei Province chemical plants is one of pharmaceutical chemistry's great origin stories. The Sumerians used willow bark for fever and pain relief 4,000 years ago; 19th-century chemists isolated salicin as the active compound; and Hermann Kolbe's 1859 Kolbe-Schmitt synthesis of salicylic acid from sodium phenolate and CO₂ enabled industrial production. Today, China's Hebei Province is the world's dominant salicylic acid production center, with Hebei Jingye Group and Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical among the major producers supplying the global aspirin industry. The Kolbe-Schmitt process that Kolbe developed in Marburg, Germany in 1859 is still the production route used in Hebei chemical plants — essentially unchanged chemistry operating in a completely different geopolitical and economic context than any 19th-century German chemist could have imagined.
