The Aditya Birla Group's Hindalco is simultaneously: (1) through Hindalco Foil & Packaging, the producer of Freshwrapp household aluminum foil sold in Indian kitchens; and (2) through Novelis (Hindalco's US-listed subsidiary), the world's largest supplier of automotive aluminum body sheet to Ford, BMW, and Audi. The Indian family conglomerate that makes the foil wrapping a Mumbai housewife's leftovers also makes the aluminum body panel of a BMW 5 Series — through subsidiaries operating at different ends of the aluminum value chain. Novelis's automotive sheet is engineered for lightweighting (reducing vehicle weight for fuel efficiency); Hindalco Foil's household product (Freshwrapp) is commodity-grade consumer goods. The same Birla family aluminum investment portfolio spans from commodity consumer kitchen foil to precision automotive lightweighting — a value chain breadth that most aluminum industry analysts tracking either segment would not recognize as sharing a corporate parent.

Hindalco Industries Ltd. is part of the Aditya Birla Group — the Indian industrial conglomerate founded by Ghanshyam Das Birla and developed by his grandson Kumar Mangalam Birla (current chairman). Hindalco is India's largest aluminum and copper company. In 2007, Hindalco acquired Novelis Inc. (the world's largest aluminum rolling company, previously owned by Alcan/Rio Tinto) for $6 billion — the largest overseas acquisition by an Indian company at the time, financed with significant debt. The acquisition gave Hindalco control of Novelis's global automotive aluminum and beverage can sheet operations while retaining Hindalco's Indian domestic foil and packaging operations. The Hindalco Foil & Packaging division's Mouda and Kollur plants represent the Indian arm of an aluminum rolling empire that extends through Novelis to automotive body panels in North America and Europe.
