Honeywell's Geismar, Louisiana HF and fluorochemical facility traces its origins to the Manhattan Project era: Allied Chemical Corporation (Honeywell's predecessor through the AlliedSignal 1999 merger) built the original US fluorine chemistry industry to produce uranium hexafluoride (UF6) — the fluorinated uranium compound used in gaseous diffusion enrichment of uranium-235 for the first nuclear weapons. The Geismar site's hydrogen fluoride capacity was expanded and repurposed for civilian applications after WWII. Today, Honeywell's Geismar HF is used to make refrigerants (Freon/Solstice), fluoropolymers (Teflon precursors), and semiconductor-grade NF3 and WF6. The supply chain infrastructure built to enrich uranium for nuclear bombs at Oak Ridge Tennessee now supplies the fluorinated gases used in TSMC's chip-etching process in Taiwan. The HF flowing from Geismar to semiconductor fabs is from production infrastructure with a nuclear weapons heritage.

Honeywell's fluorine chemistry heritage at Geismar, Louisiana traces through AlliedSignal (the 1985 merger of Allied Chemical and Signal Companies) back to Allied Chemical Corporation -- a US chemical giant formed in 1920 that operated the fluorine chemistry plants that were expanded during WWII under the Manhattan Project to produce uranium hexafluoride (UF6) for uranium enrichment. After WWII, Allied Chemical's fluorine infrastructure was converted to civilian applications: HF, fluorinated polymers, and eventually refrigerants. The 1999 Honeywell-AlliedSignal merger brought this heritage into Honeywell. Today, Honeywell's Geismar, Louisiana facility is one of the largest HF production sites in the United States, producing HF for refrigerant manufacturing (the same Solstice HFO refrigerants that are mandated for new US air conditioners), semiconductor process gases (NF3 for fab cleaning, WF6 for tungsten metallization), and aluminum fluoride (for aluminum smelting). US nuclear weapons development infrastructure underpins commercial semiconductor manufacturing and consumer air conditioning simultaneously -- through the same Honeywell Louisiana HF facility.
