  1. 01

    Air Intake & Compression

    Atmospheric air is drawn through multi-stage filters and compressed to 5–10 bar. This step represents ~40% of an ASU's total energy consumption and is the primary operating cost driver for bulk oxygen, nitrogen, and argon.

  2. 02

    Purification & Pre-treatment

    Compressed air passes through molecular sieve adsorbers (TSA/PSA) to remove water vapor, CO2, and trace hydrocarbons that would freeze and block downstream cryogenic equipment. Regeneration cycles run on 4–8 hour intervals.

  3. 03

    Cryogenic Distillation (Air Separation Unit)

    Pre-treated air is cooled to approximately -170°C using brazed aluminum heat exchangers and separated in a double-column distillation tower. O2 (-183°C), Ar (-186°C), and N2 (-196°C) are separated by boiling point. Noble gases (Ne, Kr, Xe) concentrate as byproduct streams. A single large ASU costs $200–500M and takes 18–36 months to build.

    Hydrogen Production via SMR or Electrolysis

    Grey/blue hydrogen is produced via Steam Methane Reforming: natural gas reacts with steam at 700–1000°C over a nickel catalyst, yielding syngas purified by PSA to 99.999% H2. SMR produces >90% of global merchant hydrogen. Green hydrogen uses PEM or alkaline electrolyzers splitting ultrapure water with renewable electricity.

    Acetylene Production from Calcium Carbide

    Calcium carbide (CaC2) reacts with water in a controlled generator to produce acetylene. Gas is purified, cooled, compressed, and dissolved in acetone for safe cylinder storage at 18 bar. China produces >80% of global CaC2 feedstock. Partial oxidation of hydrocarbons (BASF process) offers an alternative route used in Europe.

    Specialty & Electronics-Grade Gas Purification

    Noble gas streams (Ne, Kr, Xe) from ASU byproduct are refined using cryogenic adsorption and catalytic oxidation to semiconductor-grade purity (99.999%+). NF3 is synthesized by reacting HF with NH3. SF6 is produced by direct fluorination of sulfur. WF6 is made from tungsten metal and elemental fluorine using specialized fluorine-resistant reactors.

    Liquefaction, Cylinder Filling & Distribution

    Gases are liquefied for bulk transport (LOX, LIN, LH2 in cryogenic tankers) or compressed into high-pressure cylinders (200 bar). Liquid helium requires cooling to -269°C in specialized superinsulated dewars. Distribution logistics—pipeline grids, bulk tanker trucks, and cylinder supply chains—are as capital-intensive as production.

  8. 08

    On-site / Pipeline Supply to End Users

    Large industrial customers (steel mills, semiconductor fabs, refineries) receive gas via dedicated on-site ASUs or private pipeline systems under long-term (10–20 year) take-or-pay contracts. This "over-the-fence" model locks in customer relationships: once a fab is piped to a Linde ASU, switching is a multi-year capital project.
