Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) operates one of the largest hydrogen fluoride (HF) production complexes in North America at Geismar, Louisiana — a 1,500-acre petrochemical site in Ascension Parish. HF is the precursor to essentially all fluoride compounds used in toothpaste actives (NaF, MFP, SnF2). Honeywell Specialty Materials produces high-purity NaF, potassium fluoride, and fluorochemical intermediates sold to pharma, personal care, and semiconductor customers. The Geismar site processes fluorspar from multiple global sources and is rated for several hundred thousand tonnes of HF annually. Honeywell is also a major supplier of specialty fluorine chemicals to the electronics sector (wafer etching, semiconductor cleaning).

Honeywell's Geismar HF complex simultaneously supplies: the petroleum refining supply chain (HF is the catalyst in "HF alkylation" units at oil refineries — where isobutane and olefins are combined using liquid HF catalyst to produce high-octane alkylate for premium gasoline blending; approximately 40% of US gasoline alkylation capacity uses HF); the semiconductor supply chain (ultra-high-purity HF etches silicon dioxide and removes residues in wafer fabrication); and the personal care/oral health supply chain (NaF produced from HF is the active fluoride ingredient in toothpaste). A disruption at Honeywell's Geismar Louisiana HF production would simultaneously affect: gasoline octane quality at refineries across the Gulf Coast, semiconductor etch rate control at US chip fabs, and toothpaste fluoride active supply. Honeywell's fluorine chemistry business traces to Allied Chemical Corporation, a merger of five large US chemical companies in 1920 (including National Aniline, Solvay Process Company, and General Chemical) that created one of the original US chemical conglomerates. Allied Chemical built HF production at multiple US sites in the 1930s-1950s to serve the growing demand for fluorocarbons (refrigerants, aerosol propellants) and HF for petroleum refining alkylation. Allied Chemical became AlliedSignal in 1985 through a merger with Signal Companies; AlliedSignal then acquired Honeywell in 1999 in a transaction that retained the Honeywell name (choosing the more recognized consumer brand even though AlliedSignal was the acquirer). The result: Honeywell's industrial chemical business — including the massive Geismar, Louisiana HF complex — is the direct corporate descendant of the 1920 Allied Chemical merger that brought together American chemical industry giants during the early industrial consolidation era. The same Geismar site that processes fluorspar into HF for semiconductor chip makers also produces the Solstice HFO refrigerant that is the global replacement for high-global-warming-potential HFCs under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
