    Honeywell's refrigerant business descends from AlliedSignal's Genetron brand, which itself traces to Allied Chemical Corporation -- a company formed in 1920 through the merger of five US chemical companies and which became one of the largest US chemical conglomerates of the 20th century. Allied Chemical built its fluorochemical capability during World War II manufacturing for the Manhattan Project's uranium hexafluoride separation program. The postwar fluorochemical infrastructure was redirected to refrigerant manufacturing. AlliedSignal (the post-Allied Chemical renamed entity) was acquired by Honeywell in 1999 -- with the Honeywell name retained but AlliedSignal's engineering culture dominating. Honeywell co-developed HFO-1234yf (the low-GWP automotive refrigerant) alongside Chemours (DuPont spinout), and the resulting HFO-1234yf patent portfolio became the center of an EU antitrust investigation when European automakers (Mercedes, BMW) complained about pricing. A chemical company with Manhattan Project fluorochemical heritage is now the dominant supplier of the refrigerant going into new car air conditioning systems globally.
