Honeywell produces HFA-134a for both HVAC refrigeration (as R-134a, used in refrigerators and commercial cooling equipment still in service) AND as pharmaceutical-grade propellant for pMDI asthma and COPD inhalers. The HVAC industry (commercial refrigeration and building cooling) and the pharmaceutical industry (asthma inhaler manufacturing) share the same Honeywell HFA-134a production capacity from the Geismar, Louisiana facility. When EU F-gas regulations mandated phase-down of R-134a in HVAC applications, Honeywell redirected some HFA-134a capacity to pharmaceutical markets (where the EU phase-down timeline for pharmaceutical propellant use is later than for HVAC). Honeywell's role in pharmaceutical inhaler propellants is a direct descendant of refrigerant chemistry: HFA-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) was developed as the non-ozone-depleting replacement for CFC-12 refrigerant in automotive air conditioning. The same molecule that replaced Freon R-12 in car air conditioners was qualified as a pharmaceutical propellant for pMDI inhalers in the 1990s -- its low toxicity and chemical inertness in the lung made it ideal for asthma and COPD medication delivery. Honeywell (through AlliedSignal/Allied Chemical lineage) was one of the original producers of pharmaceutical-grade HFA-134a. Now, as EU F-gas regulations mandate phase-down of HFA-134a due to its high GWP (1430), Honeywell is developing HFA-152a (GWP=4) as the next pharmaceutical propellant -- another refrigerant molecule transitioning to pharmaceutical use. The global asthma treatment supply chain is structurally dependent on a refrigerant manufacturer's decisions about which fluorochemicals to develop and scale.
