Honeywell's SF6 business represents one of the most acute tensions between energy infrastructure reliability and climate change mitigation. SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) is the ideal electrical insulation gas for high-voltage switchgear: it is non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically stable, and has exceptional dielectric properties that allow GIS (gas-insulated switchgear) to be 10x smaller than air-insulated alternatives. Every major utility grid — from the US power grid to the European grid to Chinese transmission networks — depends on SF6-insulated switchgear to safely interrupt fault currents in high-voltage circuits. But SF6 has a global warming potential of 23,500 times CO2 over 100 years, making it one of the most potent greenhouse gases; a single kg of SF6 leaked from switchgear is equivalent to 23.5 metric tonnes of CO2. The EU has mandated a transition away from SF6 in new switchgear by 2030 in some applications. Honeywell has developed Solstice N40 — a low-GWP alternative gas blend — positioning itself to supply the replacement gas market even as it continues supplying SF6 to existing equipment. The company simultaneously supplies the product (SF6) that needs to be phased out for climate reasons AND the alternative product (Solstice N40) that replaces it — a deliberate straddling strategy in a regulatory transition. The power grid reliability supply chain and the climate change mitigation objective are in direct tension through the same Honeywell fluorine chemistry business.
