Honeywell UOP acquired Johnson Matthey's Catalyst Technologies business for £1.8B in May 2025, consolidating JM's HYTREAT™ hydrotreating catalysts into Honeywell's refinery technology portfolio. Johnson Matthey had positioned HYTREAT as a low-lifecycle-emissions catalyst for ULSD and renewable fuel processing.     Honeywell UOP supplies process technology for both conventional petroleum refining (Platforming continuous catalytic reforming, Unionfining hydrotreating, Unicracking hydrocracking) AND sustainable aviation fuel production (Ecofining SAF process) AND methanol production from natural gas (methanol-to-olefins for plastics). The same Honeywell UOP engineering team that designs fossil fuel refining process units also designs the SAF production units installed in the same refineries -- and the methanol/olefin units that supply feedstock for plastic production. With the Johnson Matthey catalyst acquisition, Honeywell now also manufactures the catalysts used in these processes.     Honeywell UOP traces its origins to Universal Oil Products Company (UOP), founded in Chicago in 1914 to develop and license the first commercial thermal cracking process for petroleum -- the Dubbs process, which converted crude oil to gasoline more efficiently than distillation alone. UOP pioneered the technology licensing model in petroleum refining: rather than operating refineries, UOP developed processes and licensed the technology to refiners globally. Allied Chemical acquired UOP in 1931; AlliedSignal (the renamed Allied Chemical) was subsequently acquired by Honeywell in 1999, bringing UOP's technology licensing library into Honeywell. The May 2025 acquisition of Johnson Matthey's Catalyst Technologies business (£1.8B) is Honeywell UOP's first major move into catalyst manufacturing at scale -- adding catalyst production to its existing process technology licensing business. UOP's historic focus on process technology licensing, not catalyst manufacturing, is now expanding: Honeywell becomes both a refinery technology licensor AND a catalyst supplier simultaneously.
