    Hovione's spray drying technology for pharmaceutical amorphous solid dispersions (ASD) is the same thermodynamic process — atomizing a liquid solution and evaporating solvent in a hot gas stream to produce a powder — used industrially since 1872 to make instant coffee (a spray-dried extract) and powdered milk (whole milk spray-dried for infant formula). The fundamental process physics of Hovione's pharmaceutical spray dryers and Nestlé's instant coffee spray towers are identical; what differs is particle size target, inlet temperature, solvent system, containment grade, and GMP documentation. Hovione's budesonide ASD spray drying and a dairy company's milk powder spray drying share atomizer nozzle designs from the same handful of spray drying equipment manufacturers (APV, GEA, Niro/GEA). During COVID-19, budesonide — Hovione's primary inhalation API — was evaluated in the Oxford PRINCIPLE trial as a treatment for early-stage COVID-19 respiratory symptoms. When the PRINCIPLE trial showed benefit (2021), demand for budesonide prescriptions for COVID treatment briefly competed with the existing supply of budesonide for asthma/COPD maintenance patients, whose conditions continued regardless of the pandemic — a single inhalation API simultaneously serving a chronic disease and an acute pandemic response.

    Hovione was founded in 1959 in Loures, Portugal by Ivan Villax — a Czech organic chemist who had fled Communist Czechoslovakia after the 1948 coup. Villax escaped to Portugal during the Cold War, where Salazar's Estado Novo regime provided political stability for a Western-oriented chemical business at a time when most of Western Europe was recovering from WWII and Brazil/US were more obvious destinations for European emigrés. Villax built the business as a pharmaceutical API synthesizer, and the company remained family-controlled through his son and grandson (three generations of the Villax/Gandra family). What distinguishes Hovione from CDMOs that were sold to private equity is this decades-long family commitment to specialty pharmaceutical chemistry: Hovione invested heavily in spray drying and particle engineering for inhalation APIs in the 1980s-1990s — years before big pharma began outsourcing these capabilities — becoming one of the world's leading independent CDMOs in a niche that is now critical for asthma, COPD, and cancer drugs. A Czech chemist's Cold War escape to Portugal created one of the most technically differentiated pharmaceutical contract manufacturers in Europe.
