  • Did you know2024

HOYA Corporation is publicly known as an eyeglass lens company. It is also — jointly with AGC Inc. — one of only two global suppliers of EUV (extreme ultraviolet) photomask blanks: the ultra-flat quartz glass plates coated with reflective Mo/Si multilayers that TSMC, Samsung, and Intel require to manufacture chips at 5nm and below. There is no third supplier of EUV photomask blanks. No EUV blanks → no EUV lithography → no 5nm, 4nm, 3nm, or 2nm chips. Every smartphone processor (Apple A17 Pro, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Google Tensor), AI accelerator (NVIDIA H100), and high-end AMD Ryzen CPU manufactured at TSMC's leading-edge fabs depends on blanks from a Tokyo-headquartered eyeglass company. A fire, export restriction, or regulatory action targeting HOYA's photomask blank operations would halt leading-edge semiconductor production worldwide within weeks — with no substitute supplier at any price.

  • Concentration2024

HOYA and AGC Inc. together supply 100% of global EUV photomask blanks — there are no other qualified suppliers. Both companies are Japanese. Both would be subject to the same Japanese government export control regulations in any US-Japan trade dispute or Japan-specific sanctions scenario. HOYA's photomask blank manufacturing facility (Ami City, Ibaraki, Japan) and AGC's equivalent facility are 280 km apart — both in the same Japanese export control jurisdiction. The entire global leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing capacity (TSMC, Samsung, Intel Foundry) is simultaneously dependent on two companies in a single country for a single non-substitutable input.

  • Origin2024

HOYA Corporation was founded in 1941 to manufacture optical glass for binoculars and camera lenses — initially to replace German optical glass imports cut off by WWII. The company name derives from "Hoya" (a city in Tokyo's western suburbs), and the original founder, Shoichi Yamaguchi, built the business to supply the Japanese military with precision optics. Post-war, HOYA pivoted to civilian cameras and then to ophthalmic lenses. The critical strategic fork came in the 1970s–90s when HOYA leveraged its optical glass chemistry expertise into two directions simultaneously: eyeglass lenses (healthcare) and photomask blanks (semiconductors). The same ultra-pure glass chemistry used to make aspherical eyeglass surfaces translates directly to the atomic-flat quartz glass substrates used in semiconductor lithography. An eyeglass company and a semiconductor materials chokepoint emerged from the same wartime optics factory.
