Walk a pharmacy aisle and the pen needles and safety lancets appear to come from many different brands. A large share of them are made in one place: HTL-Strefa's plants in Łódź, Poland. HTL-Strefa is the world's leading manufacturer of safety lancets and one of the largest OEM pen-needle producers, supplying its devices on a private-label basis to companies that put their own name on the box. The apparent brand diversity of diabetes and point-of-care consumables masks a hidden single-origin concentration: the small, cheap, disposable sharps that insulin users, GLP-1 patients and blood-glucose testers depend on billions of times a year funnel through a concentrated Polish OEM base. A disruption there would surface simultaneously across many seemingly unrelated brands.
