    Hunter Industries was founded in 1981 in San Marcos, California by Edwin Hunter and his son Gary Hunter. Edwin Hunter's key invention was the gear-driven pop-up rotor sprinkler head — the PGP (Professional Grade Products) series — which replaced the industry-standard impact sprinkler head that had dominated commercial irrigation since the 1930s. Impact heads worked by the force of water hitting a spring-loaded arm, creating a clacking noise and inconsistent rotation. Hunter's gear-driven mechanism used water pressure to drive a gear train that rotated the nozzle smoothly and quietly, with adjustable arc settings. The PGP became the dominant commercial rotor within a decade and is still manufactured today in its fifth generation. Hunter remained family-owned and private, never accepting private equity or going public, giving them unusual long-term investment patience — they acquired Hydrawise (Australian smart controller software) in 2016, years before smart irrigation was mainstream, and have now built one of the larger IoT irrigation management platforms globally.
