IFFCO produces and distributes urea fertilizer that grows a significant portion of Indian food crops -- and has recently commercialized 'Nano Urea,' a suspension of nano-sized urea particles that can be foliar-applied in minute quantities with yield benefits equivalent to soil-applied urea at 50x lower dosage per acre. If Nano Urea is validated at scale, it would dramatically reduce the quantity of conventional granular urea required for India's agriculture -- IFFCO would be simultaneously the primary supplier of traditional urea (to be displaced) AND the developer and seller of the technology displacing it. India imports significant amounts of urea when domestic production is insufficient; Nano Urea, if adopted broadly, could reduce these imports significantly. A cooperative of 50 million Indian farmers is simultaneously the incumbent supplier and the potential disruptor of the fertilizer supply chain its farmers depend on.

IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited) was established in 1967 -- just two years after India's catastrophic 1965-66 drought-triggered famines that killed an estimated 1.5-3 million people and forced India into humiliating dependence on US PL-480 food aid. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had promised food self-sufficiency as a matter of national pride and strategic independence; fertilizer production capacity was identified as the critical gap. IFFCO was formed as a cooperative of farming cooperatives, reflecting the Indian government's philosophy that fertilizer security should be democratically owned by farmers rather than controlled by private industrial capital or foreign companies. By the 1980s, the Green Revolution's wheat and rice yields had made India a net food exporter -- the same transformation that IFFCO's urea enabled. Today IFFCO is owned by 36,000+ member cooperatives representing approximately 50 million Indian farm families -- the largest cooperative enterprise in the world by membership.
