Independent Stave Company was founded in 1912 by T.W. Boswell in Lebanon, Missouri — in the Ozark Plateau region where American white oak forests provide the primary raw material. The Boswell family has owned and operated the company for over 110 years, making it one of the longest-standing private family businesses in US manufacturing. ISC built its position by controlling the full supply chain: selecting white oak forests, operating stave mills, running air-drying yards, and assembling finished barrels. The white oak staves must air-dry for 18-36 months before barrel assembly to reduce moisture and allow tannin chemistry to develop — meaning ISC must commit to multi-year inventory cycles. The bourbon industry boom of 2010-2025 created an extraordinary situation: craft distilleries ordering barrels at rates that required planning 10+ years in advance (accounting for spirit aging time) and the white oak supply chain planning the 80-100 year tree growth cycle. The world's largest barrel maker must simultaneously plan for this season's production and the oak forests that won't be harvestable until 2125.
